Jan Werner Müller on the rise of the spin autocrats
In a guest commentary in DerStandard on 3 October, Princeton professor Jan-Werner Müller discusses the global retreat of democracy and the strange passivity of pro-democratic forces.
In his lecture at the Dürnstein 2027 symposium entitled "Society, state, violence. What holds us together.", Jan-Werner Müller spoke about the dangers of populism for democracy.
According to him, the new dictators are not "fear dictators", but use means of influencing opinion and the existing legal system to achieve their goals. He assumes a kind of helplessness or fatalism on the part of the pro-democratic sections of society.
